- Need Roofing Service? Why A&J Reliable
Complete Roofing System Services in Westchester County

From the Tudors of Scarsdale and Bronxville to the Victorians of Tarrytown and the stone estates of Bedford, this county is filled with homes that were built long before today’s cookie-cutter subdivisions. Many originally featured slate, cedar, copper, and architectural details that deserve careful consideration when it’s time for a replacement.
A contractor who treats every roof the same can do real damage to a home’s appearance and long-term value.
We take a different approach, because a Scarsdale Tudor isn’t a Yonkers two-family. A Bedford estate isn’t a postwar ranch in White Plains. The right roof starts with understanding the home beneath it.
That’s local knowledge. That’s Westchester roofing. That’s A&J Reliable.
What Westchester does to a roof
- Ice dams. Cold, snowy winters plus older homes with weak attic insulation and ventilation is the classic Westchester recipe for ice dams — meltwater backing up under the shingles and into the ceiling below. Half of what we fix here traces back to ventilation, not the shingle.
- Freeze-thaw. The constant winter cycle of melt and refreeze pries at flashing, valleys, and aging slate. Small gaps become leaks fast.
- Mature tree canopy. Westchester's tree cover is part of why people love it — and why north-facing slopes grow moss and algae, gutters clog, and debris traps moisture against the roof.
- Nor'easters. Coastal Sound-side towns from Rye to Mamaroneck take wind and wind-driven rain that finds every weak seam.

What this means for your roof estimate
We don’t quote a roof off a photo. On a Westchester home we’re looking at the attic ventilation, the existing decking under that 40-year-old slate, the flashing around the dormers and chimneys these houses are full of, and whether your village sits in a historic or architectural-review district that limits your material and color before you even choose one.
- Why A&J Reliable
Four reasons Westchester homeowners have trust us with their roof replacement since 1977.
Forty-five years of residential roofing across NY, NJ, and CT — and a process built around the families living underneath.
- 01 / Expertise
Specialists, not generalists.
Forty-five years roofing the specific houses Westchester is built from. We know the steep-pitch work, the slate-and-cedar restorations, and the ventilation fixes these older homes actually need.
- 02 / Philosophy
We build relationships, not transactions.
Most of our Westchester work comes from homeowners we roofed years ago — and from their neighbors. That’s the standard: the kind of work that earns the next call on your street.
- 03 / Legacy
Forty-five years of proof.
Thousands of tri-state homes since 1979. Read the testimonials, check the reviews, drive past the work. The track record speaks louder than any sales pitch.
- 04 / Materials
Premium products, no compromises.
We install only what we’d put on our own homes — industry-leading systems from the major shingle, metal, and copper manufacturers. Form, function, and longevity, never one without the others.

Do I need a permit to replace my roof in Westchester?
Yes — roof replacements require a permit, and requirements vary by municipality. We handle the permitting as part of the job and know the local building departments well after forty-five years here.
My house is in a historic or architectural-review district. Does that limit my options?
It can. Villages like Bronxville and parts of Scarsdale and Rye have review boards that weigh in on roofing material and color. We’ll tell you what’s allowed before you fall in love with a product you can’t use.
Why do I keep getting ice dams every winter?
Almost always attic ventilation and insulation, not the shingles. It’s one of the most common issues we see on older Westchester homes — and we fix the cause, not just the leak.
My slate roof is leaking — do I have to replace the whole thing?
Not necessarily. Slate can last a century, and targeted restoration is often the right call. We’ll tell you honestly whether it’s worth saving or whether synthetic slate is the smarter long-term move.
How long will a new roof last here?
Architectural shingles run 20 years, metal a century-plus, copper and slate longer still. Westchester’s freeze-thaw winters make proper installation and ventilation the real driver of how long you actually get.

I called for a free estimate on gutter toppers, and 2 days later they were able to install them. They did a great job, came when they said they would. Everyone was pleasant, helpful, and very well trained. They were a wonderful team!!!Posted on KEITH O'QUINNTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. A & J Reliable just did our roof for us and we are very happy with the work that they performed. We had new shingles and gutters done and felt like we got a very fair deal and quality work. We purchased the Gutter Topper in 2018, after my father recommended A&J Reliable as they installed Gutter Topper on his home. Matthew was very friendly and informative regarding the products, installation, & free future maintenance needs. I emailed A&J about some debris on the gutters. They called within a few days to schedule a maintenance cleaning. The men arrived as discussed and cleaned the debris in a timely manner. No cost for these cleanings. Thank you A&J Reliable and your team. Highly recommend.Posted on Patricia MerrittTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We have been clients of A&J for decades. We were among the first to get leaf guards installed and were so glad we did. They come when they say they will and do great work. We now use them to blow off debris from our roof tops which get covered with needles in the fall. It continues to be a well-run operation. Explained everything necessary and arrived when scheduled.
