FAQ (Roof washing)

Do the black streaks mean I need a new roof?

Almost never. Black streaking is algae growing on the surface of otherwise sound shingles. In the large majority of cases the roof simply needs to be cleaned correctly — soft washed — not replaced. During your free inspection we’ll tell you honestly if there’s any underlying damage.

Is soft washing safe for my shingles, slate, or tile?

Yes — it’s the method shingle manufacturers recommend. Soft washing uses a biodegradable solution and a gentle, low-pressure rinse, so there’s no granule loss on asphalt shingles and no risk of cracking slate or tile the way pressure washing does.

Why not just pressure wash it — isn't that faster?

Pressure washing strips the protective granules off shingles, can force water under shingles and flashings (causing leaks), and leaves algae spores behind so the stains return within months. You get the damage without the lasting result. We never pressure wash roofs.

How long until my roof looks clean?

The black algae streaks are typically gone the same day. Heavier moss and lichen are physically rooted, so we kill them at the root and let them lighten, dry out, and flake away naturally over the next two to three weeks as the weather rinses them off.
