Edward Hopper

Only five miles east of Nanuet, New York, art lovers will be thrilled to find the Edward Hopper House Museum and Study Center.  Edward Hopper’s painting “Nighthawks,” painted in 1942, is widely considered one of the most famous artworks of the 20th century. The Museum is the house where Edward Hopper was born in 1882 and where he continued to live until he was 28 years old.  Located at 82 N. Broadway in Nyack, the museum contains many of Edward Hopper’s paintings and is furnished with period furnishings.

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Edward Hopper House Museum is well worth your time to take a look. Seeing other iconic Edward Hopper paintings will greatly increase your appreciation for this artist.

High Tor State Park

High Tor State Park is located on South Mountain north of Clarkstown. South Mountain has two peaks: High Tor and Little Tor. High Tor is 797 feet high, the highest peak in the Hudson Palisades. You can see the skyline of New York City when you are at the top of High Tor.

High Tor State Park is historically interesting because the colonists used it during the American Revolution as a signal point.  Then during World War II, it was used as an air raid watchpoint.

Amenities at High Tor State Park

A famous trail, the Long Path, passes through High Tor State Park on its way to the Catskills. Besides hiking and picnicking, you will never run out of things to see.

Wood Dale County Park

If you feel like crossing over into New Jersey, you can just go only 6 miles south of Nanuet and come to the Wood Dale County Park. It’s quite a comfortable park in the Garden State.  With 118 acres and many amenities, you will love it.

Amenities at Wood Dale County Park include several tennis courts and a playground. There is a picnic pavilion with electricity, and you can fish on the lake and play with your model boats.

Lyndhurst Mansion

You can visit the Lyndhurst Mansion, an architectural gem 12 miles east of Nanuet, New York. Built in 1838, it has had several famous owners. Many movies and TV series have used Lyndhurst as their set.
